P. 51
SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST.
And depth of Jesus’ love:
Fain would I to sinners show
The blood alone by faith applied
Only Jesus will I know,
And Jesus crucified.
38 C. M.
Agony in the garden.
1 TA ARK was the night, and cold the ground
■L' On which the Lord was laid;
His sweat like drops of blood ran down—
In agony he prayed :
2 ‘Father, remove this bitter cup,
If such thy sacred will:
If not, content to drink it up,
Thy pleasure I fulfill.’
3 Go to the garden, sinner, see
Those precious drops that flow,
The heavy load he bore for thee,
For thee he lies so low.
4 Then learn of him the cross to bear,
Thy Father’s will obey,
And when temptations press thee near,
Awake to watch and pray.
39 C. M.
Christ on the cross dying.
1 DEHOED the Saviour of mankind,
D Nailed to the shameful tree ;
How vast that love that him inclined
To bleed and die for thee !
2 Hark! How he groans, while nature shakes
And earth’s strong pillars bend I
The temple veil asunder breaks,
The solid marbles rend.
