CONVICTION AND CONVERSION.
He heard, and instantly he sent
                Salvation from on high.
S My drooping head he raised,
                My bleeding wounds he healed,
Pardoned my sins, and with a smile,
                The gracious pardon sealed.
            7 O may I ne’er forget,
                The mercy of my God,
Nor ever want a tongue to spread
                His loudest praise abroad.

The sinner ‘must be born again.*
            1 A WAKED by Sinai’s awful sound,
/v My soul in guilt and thrall I found,
                And knew not what to do ;
O’erwhelmed with guilt, with anguish slain,
I saw I ‘ must be born again,’
                Or sink in endless woe.
2 Amazed I stood, but could not tell
Which way to shun a moving hell.
For death and hell drew near:
I strove indeed, but strove in vain,
‘ The sinner must be born again,’
                  Still sounded in my ear.
3 When to the law I trembling fled,
It cursed me and pronounced me dead—
                  I fell beneath its weight:
This perfect truth renewed my pain,
‘ The sinner must be born again
                  My woe I can’t relate.
4 Again did Sinai’s thunders roll,
And guilt lay heavy on my soul—
