INVITATIONS OF THE GOSPEL.
His stubborn heart began to melt, I
When famine pinched him sore. I
3 ‘ What have I gained by sin,’ he said,
But hunger, shame and fear? I
My father’s house abounds with bread, I
While I am starving here. I
    4 ‘ I’ll go and tell him all I’ve done, I
And fall before his face; I
Unworthy to be called his son, I
        I’ll seek a servant’s place.’
5 His father saw him coming back; I
He saw, and ran and smiled, I
And threw his arms around the neck I
        Of his repenting child. I
    6 ‘ Father, I’ve sinned, but O forgive! ’ I
        ‘ Enough,’ the father said ; I
‘ Rejoice, my house, my son’s alive, I
For whom I mourned as dead. I
7 ‘ Now let the fatted calf be slain ; I
Go spread the news around ; I
My son was dead, but lives again, I
Was lost, but now is found.’
8 ’Tis thus the Lord his love reveals, I
To call poor sinners home; I
More than a father’s love he feels, I
And bids the needy come. I
