Geneva School Differences
Thr Geneva County Reaper publishes a startling edi-
turial under the caption “This School M ess.” It appears .
that the senior class at the G eneva High School is at log- ;
gerhead.s with the superintendent grow ing out of w hat j
the students regard as excessive restraints, extending even j
to their home parties and little dances and entertainm ents i
at the homes of members of the class. It further appears ?
that the “G” Club of the school held its initiation m eeting i
Saturday night after the superintendent had given instruc- f
tions against it. On Monday quite a number of students jf
were expelled "with the understanding that they could f
return to their studies when they m ade up their minds to |
conform to the view s and obey the orders of their super- }
intendent.” The Reaper then offers this sage and wise >
observation: ,j
"Mr. Conner is w hat m ight be culled a very religious |
man und is rigid in his views as to w hat is right and w hat ;
is wrong. He is living is a modern world und d ealing with
a bunch of modern children who are filled w ith a great
helping of vim, vigor and just about the right am ount of
“ h ell.” Mr. Conner cannot quite see and appreciate the i
view point of life of the younger generation, and the chil
dren cannot and will not see his.
"To control the younger generation a person must be :
m ighty broad m inded; one must resolve to be “ buddies”
with the children instead of endeavoring to be "boss.” •
His rule and control should be firm but not hard. To sue- 5
cessfully deal with the younger generation— and at the j
sam e time make them like you— is a m an’s job— and it :
takes a real man to fill that job.” *
It is alw ays regrettable when incidents arise w hich ?
interfere with proper discipline in the schools. It is not I
w ise to encourage children in rebellion against school au- j.
thority, but in cases of this kind there is usually som e fau lt t'
upon both sides. The veteran editor of the R eaper has •
apparently put his finger accurately upon the source of i
the G eneva trouble.— Alabam a Journal. !
