                                                              Geneva School Differences

                                                          Thr  Geneva  County  Reaper  publishes  a  startling  edi-
                                                     turial  under  the  caption  “This  School  M ess.”   It  appears  .
                                                     that  the  senior  class  at  the  G eneva  High  School  is  at  log-  ;
                                                     gerhead.s  with  the  superintendent  grow ing  out  of  w hat  j
                                                     the  students  regard  as  excessive  restraints,  extending  even  j
                                                     to  their  home  parties  and  little  dances  and  entertainm ents  i
                                                     at  the  homes  of  members  of  the  class.  It  further  appears  ?
                                                     that  the  “G”  Club  of  the  school  held  its  initiation  m eeting  i
                                                     Saturday  night  after  the  superintendent  had  given  instruc-  f
                                                     tions  against  it.  On  Monday  quite  a  number  of  students  jf
                                                     were  expelled  "with  the  understanding  that  they  could  f
                                                     return  to  their  studies  when  they  m ade  up  their  minds  to  |
                                                     conform   to  the  view s  and  obey  the  orders  of  their  super-  }
                                                     intendent.”   The  Reaper  then  offers  this  sage  and  wise  >
                                                     observation:                                                ,j
                                                          "Mr.  Conner  is  w hat  m ight  be  culled  a  very  religious  |
                                                     man  und  is  rigid  in  his  views  as  to  w hat  is  right  and  w hat  ;
                                                     is  wrong.  He  is  living  is  a  modern  world  und  d ealing  with
                                                     a  bunch  of  modern  children  who  are  filled  w ith  a  great
                                                     helping  of  vim,  vigor  and  just  about  the  right  am ount  of
                                                     “ h ell.”   Mr.  Conner  cannot  quite  see  and  appreciate  the  i
                                                     view point  of  life  of  the  younger  generation,  and  the  chil­
                                                     dren  cannot  and  will  not see  his.
                                                          "To  control  the  younger  generation  a  person  must  be  :
                                                     m ighty  broad  m inded;  one  must  resolve  to  be  “ buddies”
                                                     with  the  children  instead  of  endeavoring  to  be  "boss.”  •
                                                     His  rule  and  control  should  be  firm  but  not  hard.  To  sue-  5
                                                     cessfully  deal  with  the  younger  generation— and  at  the  j
                                                     sam e  time  make  them   like  you— is  a  m an’s  job— and  it  :
                                                     takes  a  real  man  to  fill  that  job.”                  *

                                                         It  is  alw ays  regrettable  when  incidents  arise  w hich  ?
                                                     interfere  with  proper  discipline  in  the  schools.   It  is  not  I
                                                     w ise  to  encourage  children  in  rebellion  against  school  au-  j.
                                                    thority,  but in  cases  of this  kind  there  is  usually  som e  fau lt  t'
                                                     upon  both  sides.   The  veteran  editor  of  the  R eaper  has  •
                                                    apparently  put  his  finger  accurately  upon  the  source  of  i
                                                    the  G eneva  trouble.— Alabam a  Journal.                   !
