HOW LAMAR AND I MET

It was dusk. Ethel and I were coming from town. We were at Uncle Dan's store
(CD Chapman's & Company) walking down the sidewalk licking an ice cream cone and
about to freeze. We were fussing when we met Lamar Beck coming from football
practice going to Chapman's where his daddy worked. We stopped to say hi to him. I
told him that Ethel is fussing with me about the party the Booster Club is having tonight at
her house. She is afraid I'll be mad because I can't go. I told her that I am going to the
party!! I'll just say that I've come to see you. Mrs. Morris won't care, but Ethel said that
she would. Ethel spoke up and said that it had already been decided that I would be asked
to join next time. I said to Lamar, "Didn't you say that you were going to pick me up"?(he
was a member). Ethel said "no you can't, Abbie can't go". Lamar went along with me
teasing Ethel and said that he had asked Abbie this morning. Ethel said," no we can't
have anyone but members"! As we parted Lamar said that he would see me tonight.
Ethel said, "you want either". I went home ate supper, took my bath, and put on my red
flowered beach pajamas, which were all the rage. As I started to the front door to sit on
the porch, a knock came at the door. I went to the door and there stood Lamar Beck.
We stood on the porch talking. He was telling me that the party didn't last long. Geneva
was playing Hartford in Hartford Friday next, and he knew that we were spending the
weekend in Hartford. Merrill Richards was having a party after the game. He asked me if
I would go with him. I had said yes, then began to wonder how I'd get out of the date that
Genia Hardwick had for me. I called Genia and explained the situation and she told me no
problem. She said that she would explain to TA Windom, the star football player for
Hartford. I wondered what have I done. TA won't ever ask me again. The Hartford girls
and the Geneva girls spent week ends with each other and we dated each others
boyfriends when we visited. From that first date Lamar and I did not have many dates
with any other boys or girls. We were hooked!
