LAMAR AND ABBIE'S HOME
ON
COMMERCE STREET
Lamar and Abbie's home on Commerce Street was the scene of several weddings
and receptions.
The first wedding at the home of Abbie and Lamar's on Commerce Street was
Veda Myers and Lamar's cousin, George Beck. It was July 22, 1943.
The preacher was Robert M. Holmes of the First Baptist Church. Right after the
ceremony word came that James Beck, George's twin brother had been captured by the
Germans, and held prisoner.
The second wedding in this home was Abbie's nephew, Lewis Frank Cawthan and
Geraldine Edge, from Defuniak Springs Florida October 5, 1946. We had no notice of
this marriage only time to call the Baptist Preacher from the pastorium next door. The
only flower was a huge potato vine that covered the mantel.
The third wedding was Abbie's niece, Margaret Tappan and Andrew Beisel,
October 22nd, 1946. Maye asked me to do the decorating. With the help of Mrs. Allie
Mae Chapman, I did it. My first wedding to decorate. Mrs. Allie Mae loaned me her
pretty white wicker basket. She told me to use cane for greenery. Ethel's mother,
Mrs. Morris had plenty of cane. I cut the cane in the desired lengths and put it in churns
by the fire place in the living room. For the life of me I cannot remember what I put in the
pretty wicker basket. The minister was Reverend Robert M. Holmes of the First Baptist
Church. I never did see a picture of my first wedding to decorate. From that day, the
florist bug bit me.
Wedding number four was cousin Jack Smith and cousin M ldred Beck. They
were married at the First Baptist Church by Reverend Robert M. Holmes after prayer
meeting, December 26, 1946. A reception was held at our home, next to the Baptist
Church on Commerce Street. Mldred and Jack had a pretty wedding cake brought all the
way from Dothan. It took the whole Beck family to go to Dothan to pick out the cake
and flowers.
