NANCY FOURACRE OF ENGLAND
BORN 1803 NOT IN 1870 CENSUS

Nancy Fouracre came to America from England as a young girl. She reportedly
came to America indentured to a Captain James (Jim) Walker to be an assistant or maid to
his sick mother. It is note worthy that Jim Walker was about Nancy's age. His father was
Isham Walker. The Walker family owned a plantation near Valdosta, Georgia. While in
his home she bore a child that she named Ichabod Fouracre.

Many stories or myths about Nancy of England have circulated through the
families these past fifty years or so as different members have tried to track her beginnings
in England. She does not appear on any ship passenger list or indentured list that we can
find. The search continues for her origin in England.
One family story placed Nancy in Exeter with her father or uncle and sister. Laura
Anne had the opportunity to visit Exeter several years ago for a few hours. She did find
numerous Fouracres on microfilm. There were James, Johns, Jesses Elizabeths and
Nancys in the 1600 and 1700 hundreds. She could not make a connection in the short
period of time. Another clue lead us to believe that the records of all births in Exeter were
registered at Catherine Cathedral and Cloisters in Exeter. She did not have a reservation
to search the records and not enough time to make one on this visit. Exeter does have a
Fouracre Street in the north of town.

Additional spelling: Fouracre-Fouracres-Foreacre- Fourakers, may be found in
                    various documents.

The name Fouracre (and all spellings) means: "Occupier of a holding of four acres of
land" Ref: Dictionary of British Surnames, 23rd edition (9294-R23d) page 133 by P.H.

For the reader of history, please note that the census records show that the census
taker was subject to change the spelling every ten years. The census shows the same
family in the same house with the spelling slightly different. Members of the same family
                    may spell the surname differently.

Nancy Fouracre married Jacob Yelvington The 27 of July 1830 in Camden
County, Georgia. Ichabod was 7 years old.

Jacob Yelvington and Nancy Fouracre Yelvington had the following children:
                    Margaret Yelvington* B: 1832 M: John Daugharty *
